I didn't get my verification code

When you sign in with your phone number, we text you a 6-digit code. If it has not arrived after a minute or two, the number it went to is usually not quite the number you meant.

  1. Read the number under Enter the 6-digit code.

The line "We sent a code to" shows the full number, country code included. If it is not your number exactly, that is why nothing came.

  2. Tap Cancel to go back.

There is no resend button on the code screen. Cancelling and sending again is how you get a new code. Your number stays filled in.

  3. Tap Phone.

  4. Check the flag next to the number field.

It starts on the country your iPhone is set to, not the country your number is from. If you have a number from another country, tap the flag and choose the right one.

  5. Check the number has no country code at the start.

The flag adds the country code for you. For the US and Canada, type the 10 digits without a 1 in front; the field puts the brackets and dash in as you go. A 1 at the start pushes the last digit off the end, and you will see "Please enter a valid phone number".

  6. Tap Send code.

Then wait a minute or two before trying again.

Careful

Sending again and again does not help and will hold you up for a few minutes. After a few tries you will see "Too many requests. Please try again later." or "Too many attempts. Please wait a few minutes and try again." Wait, then send one more time.

Tip

"That number cannot receive text messages. Please use a mobile number." means the number is a landline or something else that cannot get texts. Use your mobile number, or sign in with Apple, Google or Facebook instead.

Tip

"Phone sign-in is not available in your country yet" means we cannot text numbers from that country. Phone sign-in works with the countries in the flag menu only, and +1 numbers from the Caribbean are not included. Sign in with Apple, Google or Facebook instead.

Tip

"That code has expired or was already used. Please request a new one." means the code is too old or has had too many wrong guesses. Cancel and send a new one. "That code is not correct" means it was mistyped: check it against the text and try again.

Tip

If the text has arrived but you cannot find it, check whether Messages is filtering texts from unknown senders into a separate list.

Tip

If you see "Please update to the latest version of the app", update Roomie from the App Store. Older versions can no longer send codes.

Careful

Before you switch to signing in with Apple, Google or Facebook instead, remember that a different option can mean a different account. If you normally use your phone number, it is worth waiting and trying the code again first.
